+FOBT

Positive faecal occult blood test (+FOBT)

If your FOBT results are positive, this means blood has been detected in your stool sample. About one in 14 people will have a positive FOBT result.

A positive result does not always mean you have bowel cancer. There are lots of reasons you could have blood in your poo, and most of these are not related to cancer.  Bleeding may be caused by several conditions, including polyps, haemorrhoids or inflammation.

However if blood is detected, the cause of the bleeding must be investigated.  You need to contact your doctor to discuss the results and what further tests will be required.

What happens next with a +FOBT?

If you have a positive FOBT test result you need to see your GP as soon as you can to find out what’s causing the bleeding.

Your GP will probably refer you to a specialist to have a procedure called a colonoscopy.
